5 Makeup Must-Haves After 40

⏱ 7 minute read

There is a certain kind of freedom that comes with turning 40 and nowhere is that freedom more visible than in the way we approach makeup. Gone are the days of caking on full-coverage foundation to hide every imperfection, contouring until our faces look like someone else’s, or chasing trends that were never designed for melanin-rich skin in the first place. What we are doing now is enhancing, not erasing. We are choosing products that honour our skin’s natural luminosity, work with our texture instead of against it, and, most importantly, make us feel like the most radiant version of ourselves, not a filtered Instagram avatar.
Knowing this and finding those products is another thing. For decades, the beauty industry treated Black women as an afterthought; offering a handful of “deep” shades that were still too ashy, formulas that oxidized into orange messes by noon. And when you add mature skin into the mix? It gets even trickier. Mature melanin-rich skin has its own set of needs because it is prone to dryness, hyperpigmentation, and losing that bouncy elasticity we took for granted in our 20s. It does not respond well to heavy, matte powders or drying lipsticks. It craves hydration, luminosity, and formulas that move with us, not against us.
That is why the rise of globally recognised brands such as Fenty Beauty, ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr, Danessa Myricks, Live Tinted, and Juvia’s Place feels less like a trend and more like a revolution. These are industry leaders setting the standard for what inclusive, age-positive beauty actually looks like.

Choosing a foundation

If you have ever had the experience of using a foundation that turned gray on your skin by midday, you know the frustration. Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt’r Hydrating Longwear Foundation changed the game when it launched foundation designed for melanin-rich skin. It is able to keep mature skin from looking dry or cakey, buildable enough to cover hyperpigmentation without feeling heavy, and luminous enough to give that “I slept eight hours and drank two liters of water” glow, even if you did not.

Maybelline’s Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation deserves a shout-out too, especially for those of us on a budget. With over 40 shades, including deep tones with golden, neutral, and red undertones, it is one of the few affordable foundations that does not turn ashy on darker complexions. It blurs pores instantly without drying out mature skin, which is a rare feat at any price point.

But if you are someone who prefers a powder foundation, M.A.C Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation is a cult favorite for a reason. It is buildable, does not look chalky on deep skin, and gives a natural, skin-like finish that looks great in photographs.

Heavy-handed application is the enemy of mature skin, no matter your complexion.

—

But even the best foundation will if it applied wrongly. Heavy-handed application is the enemy of mature skin, no matter your complexion. Instead of swiping foundation across your face like you are painting a wall, try pressing it in with a damp sponge or stippling brush. Start at the center of your face (where you likely need the most coverage) and blend outward, building in thin layers rather than applying one thick coat. This technique prevents the product from settling into fine lines, gives you more control over coverage, and leaves your skin looking like skin, not a mask.

Concealer

If there is one thing that can make or break a look, it is the concealer. Under-eye darkness, hyperpigmentation around the mouth, and post-acne marks are common concerns for women, but the wrong concealer can make them worse by turning ashy, settling into fine lines, or looking like a chalky patch on your face. The trick is to find a formula that is hydrating enough to not crease, pigmented enough to cover without layering, and undertone-matched so it does not gray out.

Morphe’s Wakeup Artist Under Eye Correcting Concealer is a standout here because it was literally formulated for deeper complexions. It brightens without flashback, does not oxidize, and has enough slip to blend seamlessly without tugging delicate under-eye skin.

Benefit Cosmetics’ Boi-ing Cakeless Concealer is another top pick, it is lightweight, hydrating, and covers dark circles without creasing, which is why it made People magazine’s list of best concealers for mature skin. And if you are on a budget, Revlon’s ColorStay Skin Awaken 5-in-1 Concealer has light-reflecting pigments that instantly refresh tired eyes on melanin-rich skin without breaking the bank.

Blush and bronzer

Blush and bronzer help you add dimension, warmth, and life back into your face. But powders can emphasize texture and dryness if they are not formulated correctly. Creams and liquids, on the other hand, blend seamlessly, add dimension, and enhance natural glow without looking like you have painted your face.

Fenty Beauty’s Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Blush is a favourite for because it offers buildable, natural-looking color that melts into melanin-rich skin without looking patchy.

Rare Beauty’s Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in “Grateful” is another standout; it is a warm, rosy shade that flatters deeper complexions and blends effortlessly for a youthful flush.

And if you are someone who loves the ease of a powder but needs the blendability of a cream, Danessa Myricks’ Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder in “Flushed – Red Velvet” is a hybrid formula that sets like a powder but applies like a cream, perfect for mature skin that needs both longevity and hydration.

For bronzer, Merit’s Bronze Balm is a creamy, blendable formula that adds warmth without looking muddy. To apply perfectly, smile to locate the apples of your cheeks, then blend cream blush upward toward the temples. For bronzer, apply to the high points of the face where the sun naturally hits: forehead, cheekbones, and jawline.

Define, Lift and Brighten Eyes

The goal with mature eyes is definition, lift, and brightness. Heavy eyeliner and thick mascara can weigh down mature eyes, especially on deeper complexions where dark shades can look harsh if they are not balanced correctly. The trick is to use formulas that define without dragging, lengthen without flaking, and enhance without overwhelming.

Makeup For Ever’s Aqua Resist Smoky Shadow is a longwear, waterproof eyeshadow that stays vibrant on lids without creasing or fading, perfect for long, hot days. Their Aqua Smoky Extravagant Mascara is a tubing formula that lengthens and volumizes without flaking, which is a game-changer for mature lashes that tend to be more brittle.

And if you are looking for a drugstore option, Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Sky High Washable Mascara was named by Today as a top lengthening mascara for mature skin, it lifts and defines without weighing down lashes.

To open up your eyes, curl your lashes before applying mascara, and focus the formula on the outer corners for an instant lifted effect. And instead of drawing a thick line on your lid, try tightlining; applying liner to the upper waterline. This defines the eye without closing it off, and it works beautifully on deeper complexions where harsh black liner can sometimes look too stark.

Lips

Lip lines become more pronounced, lips can lose volume, and the wrong formula can emphasize every crack and crease. But the right technique and the right products can create fullness, prevent feathering, and keep lips hydrated and luscious.

Fenty Beauty’s Trace’d Out Longwear Waterproof Pencil Lip Liner in “Brownd Out” is a deep, warm brown that flatters melanin-rich skin.

And for gloss, Lawless Forget The Filler Lip Plumping Line Smoothing Gloss in “Strawberry Popsicle” is a hydrating formula with hyaluronic acid that plumps without stinging or emphasizing lines.

Maybelline’s Lifter Gloss with Hyaluronic Acid is an affordable option that adds shine and hydration to mature lips without stickiness.

After applying lip color, blot with a tissue and press a tiny amount of translucent powder over your lips (through the tissue) to set without drying. And for extra fullness, apply a dot of gloss to the center of your bottom lip. This technique creates the illusion of volume, prevents feathering, and keeps your lips looking hydrated and youthful all day.

It is about rejecting the idea that aging is something to fight and embracing the idea that it is something to celebrate.

But the easiest way to look perfect at every stage of your life is honoring your skin, and choosing products that make you feel like the most radiant version of who you already are. It is about rejecting the idea that aging is something to fight and embracing the idea that it is something to celebrate.
